A new century- 2000s!


So what happened in the Noughties? Here is video to refresh you on what happened in the decade.




Firstly, put this on, and you'll feel like you're back in the noughties!



Fashion in the 2000s

In this decade, fashion was often a 'mash-up' of previous styles and subcultured styles eg Indie-pop.
The mid to the end of the 2000s, people often wore recycled vintage styles that were popular in the 40s, 50s, 60s & 80s.

Fashions that were prominent in the 2000s were Ugg boots, high tops, hoodies and skinny jeans.




FairTrade

However, a new breed of eco-friendly and ethical clothing were born- fairtrade.




The summer of 2007 saw an incline of interest of eastern and fair trade fashion. Fashions from places like India and the Middle East. These fashions included harem pants, gypsy tops and sarongs.



Popular accessories included aviator sunglasses, small red glass or pearl drop earrings rather than the large hoop earrings of the early 2000s.




Leading Fashion Designers in the noughties

Many fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang were ahead of everyone else in the fashion world, and many manufacturers copied and reproduced their work.




Mid 2000s- Boho Chic

From 2004 onwards, women started to wear low-rise skinny jeans, knee high boots and trench coats. Also, they wore thin belts along with long blouses and tunics. This look was called the 'Boho Chic'. People also wore dresses that were inspired by Christian Dior's 'New Look' with sandals in the summertime.





The late Noughties

At the beginning of 2006, men and womens fashions became influenced by 1980s punk. Fashions such as acid wash skinny jeans and neon colours became especially popular. Shirts and jeans had rips in them which were held together by safety pins. Also, leather jackets made a comeback.

By 2008, these looks had become 'mainstream' due to popularity of indie pop and new wave music. People started to wear more general items of 80s streetwear, for example; denim print leggings (commonly known as jeggings) and knitted sweater dresses.  





Emo Subculture

Youth fashion was heavily influenced on music-based subcultures for example, The Emo.
'Emo' is is a ''style of rock music characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. '' (wikipedia).

Bands such as My Chemical Romance (MCR) and Fall Out Boy (FOB)







The Chav Subculture

In the early 2000s, one of the most common British subcultures were the chavs.
Chavs favoured burberry print baseball hats and scarfs, tracksuits and white nike, addidas or reebok trainers. 




Moshers

Moshers were seen as a rival subculture to the Chavs. Moshers were usually skaters who had long hair or sometimes dreadlocks. They wore grunge inspired checked flannel shirts with baggy jeans as they were less likely to rip during skating. Brands like No Fear were very popular between the Moshers.

1990s



Many trends from the early and mid-1990s carried on into the 1990s. This included flared trousers, miniskirts and low-waisted jeans. People also wore thong underwear that was inspired and created by contemporary R&B and jungle music.  Belly shirts came into fashion your thong hanging out of your jeans was a fashion statement.





Grunge (or commonly known as Seattle Sound) began in the 1990s when people were inspired by bands such as Nivana and Pearl Jam. Grunge or nowadays known as 'indie' meant that people wanted to be different, and not like the norm (e.g. preps).





The Prep Subculture

The prep subculture began in the United States during the 90s.
''The term preppy derives from the expensive pre-college preparatory or prep schools that American upper-class and upper-middle-class children in the Northeasten states sometimes attend. (wikipedia)''.






Saved by The Bell was a programme filmed in the 90s. Many people were influenced by the way they dressed. 





Converse

Converse All Star by Chuck Taylor were very popular in the 90s. They were worn between both genders, all ages and, with anything! Girls wore them with babydoll dresses, lace trimmed shorts. Guys wore them with biker jackets, and plain clothing. 



Clueless- Clueless is a very popular 90s film that shows us what kind of clothing people wore in the 90s.
It is a classic that shows you many of the latest trends at the time; for example, solid under tee blazers and airwalk trainers. 




Fresh Prince Of Bell Air


Snapbacks

Snapbacks became popular in the 90s when they were introduced by the Hip-Hop community. Rappers such as Tupac had raised the hats popularity through their music videos and album covers. Throughout the 90s snapbacks were mostly worn by the poor youth, since 59 fifty hats were more expensive. 

Nearing the end of the decade, snapbacks were declining in popularity.

The 1980s


During the 1980s opposite views were valued than were in the late 1970s. More and more people during this decade were dressing for success, especially in the later years. 

Kalvin Klein 

In the early 1980s Klein changed the American market of men's underwear—one where most men's underwear was white, purchased in packs of three by a "wife, mother or girlfriend when they needed to be" to one where "the American male to care about the brand of something few ever see".
 





Girls Just Want To Have Fun- This film was set into the 80s. 


There were many popular fashion crazes in the 80s for example:
-Shoulder Pads
-Mini Skirts
-Leg Warmers
-Big Earrings
-Fingerless gloves
-Oversized Tops
-Stretch-Stirrup Pants




Madonna 


Madonna was the biggest style and pop icon in the 80s, she also had many looks during the 80’s. She had the ability to change her style and re-mix it. This contributed to her longevity of her career.


Leotards and Dancewear

Leotards of the early 1980s featured bright stripes, polka dots, and even elastic belts. Dance became so popular because of aerobics and dance-themed television shows and movies, such as Fame  created a dancewear fashion craze, and leotards, legwarmers, and headbands were soon being worn as street wear.


The Princess Of Wales 

At the beginning of the 80s Princess Diana caused some fashion embarrassment for the Royal Family. So much so that they had tutors from Vogue come over and try to teach Diana some fashion sense. By the middle of the 80s, she took what she learned from fashion lessons and did what she wanted to. She soon became the  trendsetter of the 80s.

1970s


1970s fashion began with a continuation of the mini skirts, bell-bottoms and the androgynous hippie look from the late 1960s. 

By 1970, women could choose who they wanted to be, and they wore whatever they want. By this time they had more freedom to wear what they want. Women could even wear trousers!

For evening wear women wore maxi dresses and halter neck jumpsuits. 




Platform shoes and flared trousers were also popular. They were popular among both sexes. 


The hippie look was most prominent at the beginning of the 70s. After that, jeans became frayed and tie-dyed shirts were the height of fashion.

In 1971 Hot Pants and crop tops were the latest fashion craze for women. 


Another trend for both sexes was the fitted blazer, which flared slightly at the hip. It came in a variety of fabrics, including wool, velvet, suede, and leather. The blazer had covered buttons and wide lapels. 

Glam Rock

Glam Rock was popular in the 70s. It was a style of rock and pop music that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, which was performed by singers and musicians who wore outrageous clothes, makeup and hairstyles. For example; David Bowie 


David Bowie's style was influenced by space and technology and he also dressed quite femininely. 

Some fashions that were influenced the Glam Rock style were ostrich- feather boas, rabbit-fur jackets and  satin quilted jackets.




Jean Muir

Jean Muir was a British fashion designer in the 1970s. She was famous for making black jersey dresses. She ignored the fads of fashion and hated printed textiles and embroidery. 

She aimed her work at the mature woman. Her clothes were 'comfotable and effortless'. 



Ossie Clark

Ossie Clark was also another major British fashion designer. 
He was known for his Flamboyant style.

Austin Powers



Austin Powers was set in the 60s.


Biba






Biba was an iconic fashion store in London of the 1960s and 1970s. The store was run by Barbara Huluniki. 
For the first few years after opening, the store offered high fashion at cheap prices. by in 1974 the store moved to a big department store in London. Biba has fell into administration twice but then in 2009 House Of Fraser took Biba under their wing and now Biba is going strong.

With the division of the Mods and Rockers, it gave music a chance to thrive. Bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones rose to fame. It also influenced aspects of fashion, for example The Who logo was made into T-shirts and other garments.

Mary Quant


Mary Quant became an instrumental figure in the 1960s. She became famous for the 'Miniskirt' and 'Hot-pants'.
Mary Quant encouraged young people to dress to please themselves. 




Twiggy

Twiggy (Lesley Hornby) is a British actress and model. She became the prominent model of the Swinging Sixties.Twiggy was initially known for her thin build and her large eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair.

Twiggy worked closely with Mary Quant and her fashion collaborations, seen in dresses and skirts that hit at around six or seven inches above the knees.
